Shock After a 10-Year-Old Boy Hangs Himself In Tana River

A ten-year-old boy committed suicide inside their home on Friday evening in Samira, Madogo Town, Tana River County.

An incident that has shocked both neighbours and residents.

The Grade 5 student abandoned his peers who were playing a few metres away and went straight to their mud-thatched house to commit the unthinkable.

According to the mother’s neighbour and friend, Roseline Nyateta, the deceased showed no signs of stress or mental disturbance prior to the incident.

“I was not around when the incident happened but I am told he just left his friends outside playing before going straight into the house. They only started suspecting something was amiss when they called him and he failed to respond,” she said.

“It is only when they went into the house to check that they found his body hanging on a rope.”

When the press arrived, shocked residents were milling around the house, hoping to catch a glimpse of the body that was still hanging. Police had not yet arrived.

The boy’s mother, who was not present at the time of the incident, was wailing in pain as neighbours attempted to console her.

Grace Mwangangi, her grandmother, expressed regret over the turn of events, stating that losing a child was extremely sad.

“I am always with this boy most of the time and I have never noticed anything suspicious that would have made me think he could end up taking his own life. He was such a disciplined and loving boy. I am lost for words,” he said.

The police eventually arrived and took the body to the mortuary at the Garissa County referral hospital.
