Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives stationed in the Coast region arrested a suspected drug trafficker on Saturday. They seized cannabis sativa worth more than Ksh 11 million.

On Saturday, the sleuths conducted a sting operation along the Samburu-Kinango Road, intercepting a heavily laden Toyota at the Mdomo Centre in Kwale County after receiving a tip from locals.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, detectives searched the vehicle and discovered seven green gunny sacks containing drugs that were allegedly being trafficked to an unknown destination.

“Seven green gunny sacks containing long khaki rolls of marijuana weighing 389.45 kgs with an estimated street value of Ksh 11,683,500.”

When one of the suspects realized they had been made, he jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran into a thicket.

Another suspect in the same vehicle was cornered and arrested by the detectives while attempting to flee.

The suspect was then detained at the Mombasa Urban Police Station until Monday when he was scheduled to appear in court.

DCI stated that the exhibits would help investigators determine where the drugs were being trafficked and who was behind the operation.

This comes as coastal leaders have expressed concern about increased drug trafficking in the region.

A recent report released by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA) in June revealed an increase in drug use in the country.

The report showed a prevalence of drug use among university students aged 18 to 24 years.

According to NACADA, more than half of the youth (596,336 out of 1,137,288) abuse drugs and substances.
