Budget Committee Faults Gachagua’s Office For Role-Duplications

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s office has spent Ksh203 million on activities related to his anti-drug campaign and coffee sector reforms.

In its report on the first Supplementary Budget Estimates for the Fiscal Year 2024/2025, the Budget and Appropriations Committee expressed concern about role duplication between the office and other government entities.

The committee expressed its concerns, noting that the Office of the Deputy President was carrying out the functions of other government agencies such as the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and the Ministry of Agriculture.

“The Committee on Administration and Internal Security observed that the Office Deputy President undertook functions related to the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA),” read the report in part.

The DP’s office has been accused of duplicating roles in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse, costing Ksh20 million.

The DP’s office was also accused of duplicating roles for Ksh183 million in coffee sector reforms.

“The allocation of duplicated activities included Ksh20 million towards Alcohol, Drugs, and Substance Abuse and Ksh183 million towards Coffee Sector Reforms Implementation Committee,” read the statement.

The committee emphasized the importance of funding these activities through their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDA).

It is currently unclear what steps the government will take in response to the committee’s findings.

Notably, the DP has recently become embroiled in controversy over his efforts to combat illicit brew.

In the most recent instance, he clashed with Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, who was once a close ally.

Gachagua accused Wamumbi of sabotaging the region’s efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit liquor.

Wamumbi quickly responded on social media, dismissing the claims.

He accused the DP of making false allegations and urged him to tell Kenyans the truth about why they were at odds.
