‘I’m guilty’ – Gachagua Apologises For Overly Defending Mount Kenya Region

The Deputy President has expressed his love for the central region, saying he has a lot in common with them.

The DP stated that he will unapologetically declare his love for the Mt Kenya region.

He did, however, add that his affection for the central region should not cause conflict with other regions.

“I’m guilty as charged, I have no defence, that I love my people, care for them and think about them then I’m guilty as charged,” he said.

“It does not mean that because I love my people, I have a problem with the other people. The rest of Kenyans are all our friends, they are my people whom I agree with, we talk the same language and understand each other.”

The DP urged Kenyans to love and protect one another in whatever they do.

He spoke at a church service on Sunday at St Stephen Catholic Parish in Karoroha, Nyandarua.

The DP’s views on Mount Kenya have sparked debate in the country in recent months, particularly since he supported the one-man, one-shilling revenue-sharing formula.

The DP elicited mixed reactions, with some leaders criticizing him and others supporting his proposal.

On June 7, Gachagua stated that his position on the revenue-sharing formula was simply an opinion that could not be imposed on Kenyans.

“The fact that I’m Deputy President does not extinguish my right as a Kenyan, as per the constitution to have an opinion.  That opinion is not a command, allow me to persuade you that this formula can work,” he said.

Gachagua went on to say that Kenyan leaders who disagree with him have the right to their own opinions.

“Some leaders are calling me a tribalist probably because the opinion I give seems to be liked by the people from the region where I come from,” stated Gachagua.
