Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has confirmed that Kenya is one of the countries where content creators can earn money on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

Meta announced in a press release on August 6, 2024, the availability of two new monetization features for eligible Kenyan creators.

This follows President William Ruto’s agreement with the company in December 2022.

In-stream ads can play before, during, or after on-demand videos, whether they are pre-recorded or published as a recording of a previous live stream.

“I have spoken directly to Meta, the parent company of Facebook to monetize content. If I was not a State officer, I wonder what the content on my small Facebook page would earn me daily,” the president previously said.

“In stream-Ads on Facebook and Facebook Ads on reels will enable creators to earn money for crafting original videos and creating communities,” read the statement in part.

“Every day, we’re inspired by the incredible African creators who use Facebook to tell their stories, connect with others and bring people together,” Moon Baz, Global partnerships Lead, Africa, Middle East and Turkey (AMET) said during the rollout.

Ads on Facebook Reels will seamlessly integrate with original reels, allowing creators to be compensated based on the performance of their original reels while also entertaining their followers.

Eligible Kenyan creators will be able to earn money for their video and reel content, with support for over 30 languages worldwide, including Swahili.

To use the products, creators must follow Facebook’s policies and be at least 18 years old.

In-stream ad creators must meet certain eligibility requirements, such as having at least 5,000 followers.

“This expansion will empower eligible creators in the vibrant creative industry in Kenya to earn money, whilst setting the bar high for creativity across the world and making Meta’s family of apps the one-stop shop for all creators,” added Moon.

The launch of the new monetization features is expected to boost content creation in Kenya’s creative industry.
