Governor’s Bodyguards Shoot, Injured Three People Over ‘One Term’ Chants

Three people were shot, and scores of others were injured during a youth sensitisation meeting addressed by Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, police confirmed on Friday, August 21.

According to police, the incident occurred at Bomu Stadium in Changamwe after a disagreement involving the governor’s security team and some youths attending the meeting.

The injured were taken to Mikindani Clinic before being transferred to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for further treatment, according to people familiar with the incident.

Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono said the youths had been chanting a “one-term” slogan directed at the governor before violence broke out.

“They chanted one term at the governor. As the governor tried to address them, they became violent. That is where the fracas started,” Cherono told the media.

Cherono said an unidentified group approached the governor as he addressed members of the Stawisha Fund team, after which three people were shot.

“The unknown group came when the governor was addressing the Stawisha Fund team. Three people were shot,” she said.

Witness Said Kimbo said the youths had wanted to speak to the governor and moved closer to him before his bodyguards intervened.

“As they were getting closer to the governor, his bodyguards began pushing the youths back. One pulled his gun, and I pulled one of my colleagues away,” Kimbo said.

Kimbo said one of the guards then fired, hitting his colleague in the leg as he tried to protect him.

“The bodyguard would have shot him in the chest if I had not pulled my colleague down. He then fired a bullet at the guard, which caught my colleague on the leg,” he said.

Cherono said police would pursue those involved in the violence and determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“Most of them are police officers; they should follow the law. We will trace them and get them,” she said.

The Mombasa shooting comes days after political violence in Homa Bay left at least four people dead, including a police officer, and dozens injured during a Linda Mwananchi rally.

Police said the officer died after being struck on the head by a stone while returning from the deployment.

By the time of publishing, the Mombasa Governor has yet to address the incident.
