WONDER IN KENYA: Reappointed Cabinet Secretary Claims To Have Spoken With Giraffes About Tourists

Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has sparked a heated social media debate after claiming to have communicated with giraffes during a working tour at the Wildlife Research and Training Institute in Naivasha.

Miano shared a lighthearted post on X on Friday, August 23, 2024, in which she introduced herself to the giraffes before striking up a conversation with them.

The CS said she informed the giraffes of the influx of tourists they could expect in the coming days, similar to how Biblical Balaam spoke to a donkey (Numbers 22: 1-40).

“As part of my working tour at the Wildlife Research and Training Institute in Naivasha, I took a walk to introduce myself to the Giraffes,” Miana wrote on X.

“I asked them to expect many tourists in days to come. Giraffes make Kenya magical.”

Her comments quickly went viral, eliciting a mix of humour and criticism from Kenyans online.

Some questioned the seriousness of her remark, while others expressed surprise at the statement.

Miano’s new position comes just a month after she was appointed Tourism CS in the current Cabinet.

She was appointed to her current position after President William Ruto dissolved his first Cabinet on July 11, 2024, in an effort to form a broad-based government in the wake of anti-government protests.

Miano previously served as Cabinet Secretary for the East African Community before moving to the Trade docket in 2023, where she remained until the Cabinet was dissolved.

The Tourism CS was also the first female Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), a position she held for five years.

She is also a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and has previously served on the National Council of Churches of Kenya’s Finance Committee.

Miano also served on the World Bank Group’s Advisory Council on Gender and Development.

Her newfound ability to communicate with giraffes adds an unexpected and amusing element to her already impressive resume.

On August 3, 2024, she told the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointment that her net worth was Ksh444 million.
