Gachagua Has Revealed Why He Previously Opposed Raila Amidst Political Tensions

On Tuesday, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed confidence in Raila Odinga’s ability to succeed as African Union Commission chairperson.

Gachagua, who spoke at the launch of Odinga’s AUC bid at State House in Nairobi, described the former Prime Minister as a man of incredible resilience, endurance, and perseverance.

While addressing the delegates, Gachagua revealed that he had previously questioned the Azimio Principal’s leadership, but had since changed his mind about Odinga’s leadership abilities.

According to Gachagua, he had nothing against Odinga and had previously opposed him because they were both running for the same position in government.

“Somebody may ask why Rigathi has had issues with the leadership of Raila Odinga, as a truthful man I had nothing against him,” Gachagua explained.

“It’s only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss,” he added.

The DP also assured the former Prime Minister of the government’s and Kenyans’ support as he officially launched his campaign for the top continental position.

“Now that he is going for a bigger seat in AU, all of us from the president and the Kenyans are behind him,” the DP noted.

“I have listened to the ground and all Kenyans across the political divide across communities are in support of your candidature.”

Gachagua’s comments about Raila come just two months after Odinga defended his decision to work with Gachagua despite their opposing political views, beliefs, and track records.

Raila clarified to the press on June 6 that his close relationship with the Deputy President stemmed primarily from his quest for the African Union Commission Chairperson.

“Gachagua is a member of this government and as you know, the government pledged to support my bid for AU and I thank them,” Odinga clarified.

“He has seen the light and he is a Saul who has now become a Paul,” Odinga added.
