ODM’s Junet Goes Bare Knuckle Against Kalonzo On Opposition Leadership
Junet Mohammed, MP for Suna East, has declared himself the opposition leader due to his position as Minority Leader in the National Assembly.
Junet stated that because the Office of Official Opposition is not enshrined in the Constitution, it would be appropriate to refer to the Leader of the Minority Party in the National Assembly as Opposition Leader.
“As it stands now, I am the official opposition leader because I am the Minority Leader and you cannot take away the job God has given me. Those in the opposition should know I am their leader,” he added.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka declared himself opposition leader on Wednesday, following the launch of Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson position.
Musyoka, who convened a press conference to coincide with the bid’s State House launch, stated that Azimio will continue to operate after Raila’s departure.
“Yes, I am ready to be the leader of the Official Opposition. This is the team,” he said.
“You will see the Opposition like never before. We may be light in numbers in Parliament but outside we have the people of Kenya.”
Speaking in Homa Bay, Junet stated that he and Leader of Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah are sponsoring a Bill to reintroduce the Leader of the Official Opposition into the Constitution.

“I have seen our colleagues saying we in ODM are in government and such stuff and they are now Opposition leaders,” he said.
“There is no part in the Constitution that talks about Opposition leader. Let no one allocate themselves a job that is non-existent. Let us first create an office and then someone can occupy it.”
