EXPLAINED: Why Billionaire Hasmukh Patel’s Body Was Put In A Sitting Position

It is unusual for a corpse to be seated in a special casket rather than lying inside one.

The late tycoon Hasmukh Patel, owner of Mombasa Cement, was made to sit as mourners paid him their final respects.

The late was then taken around five temples in Mombasa, where residents flocked to pay their final respects to the benevolent billionaire.

It is believed that he played an important role in the temple construction, which is why his body was moved around.

According to the family, having the deceased seated represents his eternal presence among them. They believe that his presence will linger around them.

β€œMzee will not be lying, he will be seated. A sign that he is not gone completely but still with us somehow. He will be watching,” a family member explained.

Before being cremated, his body will be taken to his charity offices opposite the Royal Court Hotel, where he assisted needy residents.

The procession, which is set to be streamlined, began at Pandya and traveled down Moi Avenue before making its first stop at the first temple he founded.

Prayers will be offered before proceeding to the next temple.

β€œThere will be a five-minute stop for prayers before proceeding to the next temple,” a family member stated.

Later, the procession came to a temple opposite the Royal Court Hotel, where thousands of needy residents used to seek help.

β€œThere will be a longer stop here because it is also where he used to sit in the evenings after work to witness how his charity services were being conducted,” a family member added.

Patel, known as the ‘people’s billionaire’ for his charitable contributions, assisted many with school fees, hospital bills, and food.
