Ugandan Olympian Athlete Hospitalized In MTRH After Attack From Kenyan Boyfriend
Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan athlete who competed in the 10,000-meter race at the Paris Olympics, was injured in an attack by her alleged boyfriend in Trans Nzoia county on Monday.
Cheptegei is in critical condition and has been transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
It is claimed that she was attacked by her boyfriend, who doused her in petrol and set her on fire.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed the incident, saying the athlete suffered 75% burns and is being treated at MTRH.
The boyfriend also suffered serious burns and is in the same hospital.
The police commander stated that they are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

Her parents, Joseph Cheptegei and Agnes Ndiema, stated that she was initially admitted to Kitale Level Four Hospital but was referred to MTRH.
The parents who had left for Uganda travelled to Trans Nzoia to learn of the attack, which occurred early today.
She is a resident of Cheminy, Uganda, but her parents claim she purchased land in Trans Nzoia and built a house where she had been staying while training.
