Nairobi Senator Reveals Why He Didn’t Pursue ODM Deputy Party Leadership

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has revealed why he has decided to forego his ambitions to become the Orange Democratic Movement’s deputy party leader in favor of remaining in his current position as Secretary General.

Sifuna stated that he aspired to become deputy party leader, describing it as a promotion from his current position.

However, he stated that he was told that certain positions are deemed too important to the party for a person to leave and seek another position.

“Increasingly, I’m hearing a lot of discussions about heart, I don’t know why or if it’s a coincidence because I aspired to move from my position as SG of the party to deputy party leader’s position which, in my view, is a promotion,” he noted in an interview on Spice FM.

“But I was given this story about heart, that there are certain positions that are the heart of the party and you cannot vacate to seek others and so on and so forth.”

During the interview, Sifuna also addressed allegations of simmering tensions within Azimio over the decision to bring four ODM members into the government.

He confirmed that Azimio would have a better chance of political success if all members stood together.

The Nairobi Senator reaffirmed that ODM would continue to hold the government accountable.

Furthermore, the ODM SG denied rumors that Azimio’s Raila Odinga was planning to retire if he won the African Union Commission chairmanship.

He confirmed that the ODM leader would take a break from politics to carry out his duties, but this did not imply that he would abandon politics in the long run.

“Politics requires presence on the ground so if you’re doing an assignment that is going to take you away from the people to interact with the daily issues, it is possible that you will scale down the level of involvement just by the nature of the role you’re taking up, that is not to say you’ve retired,” he noted.

“Retirement has the connotation that you’ve abandoned such practice and will never come back. That is not what is happening in this particular situation.”

Sifuna has served as ODM Secretary General for the past six years, a position critical to the party’s organization and operations.

Following the nominations of Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya and his Blue Mining counterpart, Hassan Ali Joho, the ODM party appointed governors Simba Arati and Abdulswamad Nassir, as well as Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, as deputy party leaders.
