REBECCA CHEPTEGEI: Ex-Lover And Prime Suspect Dies In Hospital With 30% Burns
Dickson Ndiema, the ex-lover of deceased Ugandan athlete Rebeca Cheptegei, died at Eldoret’s Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) from wounds sustained during an incident in which he suffered burns to 30% of his body.
Ndiema was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being rushed there following an altercation in which he doused Cheptegei in petrol and set her on fire.
AfricasNow can confirm that Ndiema, a sports professional, died as a result of the burns on Monday night. By the time this article was published, MTRH had yet to release a statement.
Before his death, it was widely assumed that Ndiema would be charged with Cheptegei’s murder once he had recovered.

His death brings the story to a sad conclusion, especially given that the case raised concerns about the country’s increasing cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
The United Nations (UN) condemned Cheptegei’s death and called for immediate action to address gender-based violence.
“Every 11 minutes, a woman or girl is killed by an intimate partner or family member somewhere in the world. This must stop,” Stéphane Dujarric, the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said in a statement on September 6.

Attack On Rebecca Cheptegei
Cheptegei, who competed in the 2024 Olympics, died five days ago at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital after succumbing to burns that covered 80 percent of her body.
Cheptegei was rushed to the hospital after the attack, which left her fighting for her life.
According to reports, Ndiema attacked her over a disagreement over a piece of land in Chepkum Village, Trans Nzoia County.
According to an official police report, Ndiema carried out the attack on Sunday, after Cheptegei returned from church with her two daughters.
Official reports also stated that the two had been in a dispute over the contested piece of land for some time, which was confirmed by local officials.
Cheptegei will be buried at her home in Uganda’s Bukwa District on September 14, with the neighboring country expected to pay her tribute after her Olympic heroics and illustrious career.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, has already issued a statement confirming plans to name a sports venue after Cheptegei.
