Local Chiefs Handed Power To Hire, Effect Arrests In Ruto’s New Administrative Changes

President William Ruto has given chiefs new powers as the government prepares to implement the Climate Worx Mtaani Initiative.

While addressing chiefs at the Kenya School of Government on Tuesday, September 16, the President urged them to embrace professionalism and new roles as the government prepares to hire youths for the project.

The President directed chiefs to oversee the hiring process for the Climate Works Initiative and ensure that employees were from a specific location.

“We want to have a localised program,” Ruto said. “We also want to spread employment so we don’t have multiple youths from the same family getting the jobs.”

Furthermore, the Head of State empowered chiefs to deal with corrupt individuals in their communities in the appropriate manner.

“Chiefs, I need you to be my eyes. If you spot a bribery incident, look for my number and call me if necessary. Corruption is killing us,” he added.

In an effort to combat crime, Ruto also revealed plans to give chiefs the authority to enforce the law and arrest suspects if there are no police officers available.

The first phase of the Climate Works project is scheduled to begin in Nairobi on October 1, with Ruto confirming that 20,000 young people will be stationed at various intervals in a trial system.

The youth will be responsible for planting trees along its banks as well as creating sustainable urban spaces.

They will also be challenged to develop viable solutions to Kenya’s climate change challenge.

The government intends to observe how the plan is implemented in Nairobi before embarking on the second phase of the project in major cities across the country.

Ruto’s Climate Works project is similar to his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta’s Kazi Mtaani initiative, which was discontinued when the Kenya Kwanza regime took power.
