NTSA Introduces New Number Plates, Attracts Kenyans’ Attention
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has started issuing vehicle registration number plates with the new ‘KE’ prefix, marking the progression from the previous ‘KD’ series.
The new plates have started appearing on Kenyan roads, attracting attention from motorists.
Some Kenyans are taking to social media to ask whether they can book specific combinations, including KEG and KES.
The development comes as NTSA records show that 207,259 new motor vehicles were registered between January and June 2026, with January recording the highest number.
January recorded the highest number at 37,650, followed by May with 36,299, March with 35,798, June with 35,334, April with 34,041 and February with 28,137.
Motorcycles accounted for the largest share of the registrations during the six months, as the NTSA recorded 25,421 motorcycles in January, 16,030 in February, 22,439 in March and 22,374 in April, before registrations rose to 24,167 in May and 22,696 in June.
Station wagons were the second-most registered category, with 42,808 units registered between January and June, with the data also covering pick-ups, lorries, trailers, vans, buses, saloons, three-wheelers, wheeled tractors and other vehicles.
Despite the growing public interest, an NTSA official clarified that there has been no official launch or unveiling of the ‘KE’ number plate series.

The official explained that the plates being spotted on some vehicles are part of the normal process of issuing registration numbers to motorists whose applications are being processed.
According to the official, moving from one registration series to another is a routine administrative process and does not require an official or public unveiling.
The NTSA officer further clarified that the move from the KD series to the KE series is simply the normal progression of Kenya’s vehicle registration system as available numbers in the previous series are used up.
This means the appearance of KE plates should not be viewed as the introduction of a new registration system or a major change to the existing number plate format.
This means that motorists receiving the new plates will continue to follow the existing vehicle registration procedures, with the KE prefix forming part of the ongoing allocation of registration numbers.
