President William Ruto has appointed Douglas Kanja as the new Inspector-General (IG) of Police, a day after the National Assembly ratified his appointment.

Kanja succeeds Acting Inspector-General Gilbert Masengeli, who will resume his duties as Deputy Inspector-General after temporarily leading the service.

Kanja, formerly the Deputy Inspector-General (DIG), succeeds Japhet Koome, who resigned in July.

The 60-year-old officer has nearly four decades of law enforcement experience, beginning in 1985 and steadily rising through the ranks.

He has extensive experience, including five years as the General Service Unit (GSU) Commandant while serving as DIG.

He also served as GSU’s Deputy Commandant for three years.

Kanja has also served as Kilifi County Police Commander, Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Airports Police Unit, Chief Armourer at Police Headquarters, and in other senior positions within the National Police Service.

In other news, Masengeli filed an appeal with the High Court yesterday, seeking to overturn a recent decision that sentenced him to six months in prison.

In the petition, the police chief claimed that the ruling was made without regard for the application he filed with the court.

Masengeli faulted Justice Lawrence Mugambi for sentencing him despite his earlier statement to the court that the victims were not in police custody.

The Court of Appeal, however, declined the application to suspend the jail term.
