MUHOOZI: Museveni’s Son Vows No Civilian To Lead Uganda After His Father

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stated that no civilian will rule the country after his father and long-serving President Yoweri Museveni.

Muhoozi stated on Saturday that Ugandan security forces will not allow such an incident to occur.

He insisted that the next President of Uganda would only come from the military or the police force.

“No civilian will lead Uganda after President Museveni. The security forces will not allow it. The next leader will be a soldier or policeman,” Muhoozi said on X.

This comes despite having previously expressed an interest in succeeding his father as President of Uganda.

Muhoozi announced on social media in January 2023 that he would become Uganda’s President. Then a general stated that fortune only favours God’s children, of which he is one.

“Fortune favours the sons of God! I will be President of Uganda one day,” he said in a tweet.

This comes just a few months after Muhoozi stated that becoming president of the Republic of Uganda would be the best way to honor his mother.

“The only way I can re-pay my great mother is by being President of Uganda! And I shall do it!” he said.

The remarks were part of his ongoing Twitter ‘outbursts’ since taking over from his father, Yoweri Museveni, while also putting the Ugandan opposition on notice.

Muhoozi has previously expressed confidence that the opposition, led by musician-turned-politician Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, will never lead the country after his father retires.

Uganda will hold presidential elections in 2026. Museveni has ruled the country since he took power in 1986.

“To the Ugandan opposition, after my father, I will defeat you badly in any election. Ugandans love me more than they’ll ever love you,” Muhoozi said in 2022.

Museveni, however, stated in an interview with Kenya’s KTN News that he does not support his son’s succession.

He stated that the National Resistance Movement will meet and that whoever the party chooses as his successor will receive his support.
