‘I’m Not A Complainant!’ – David Langat Distances Himself From the Morara Kebaso Fiasco

David Langat, the billionaire behind DL Group of Companies, issued a statement on Tuesday distancing himself from the Morara Kebaso tragedy.

In a statement bearing the group’s emblem, the businessman repeated that he had no connection to the charges filed against the activist and had no involvement with Kebaso’s online statements.

‘’DL Group of Companies Limited has noted the widespread interest from the public and media regarding a charge sheet that is circulating online in which our chairman, Dr David Langat, is named as the complainant,’’ read the notice in part.

Langat further stated that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had invited him to record a statement about the incident.

“On invitation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI, our chairman has recorded a statement at the DCI Headquarters this morning and reiterated that he has nothing to do with the authors or content of the subject online posts,” the statement added.

“For this reason, we wish to advise that any queries regarding the matter be directed to the relevant investigating agencies.”

Morara, who was seized on Monday evening, was brought before Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday and charged with online harassment over a post he made on his X account on September 28.

According to the charging document, Morara’s comments were deemed false information designed to tarnish Langat’s reputation.

This was found to violate Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act.

“William Ruto approached DL Langat and told him he desperately needs more money for the campaign,” Morara posted.

“DL Langat used his properties as security and took big loans to help his friend. Right now DL Langat is being auctioned by banks and the person who is buying the properties is William Ruto.

“To make it worse William Ruto has used his power to undervalue the properties to buy them at a cheaper price. That is the kind of person we are dealing with. He has no friend.”

The activist, who was represented by lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, was released on cash bail of Ksh50,000. The case is scheduled for a mention on October 4, 2024.

Morara took a tour of Nairobi’s Central Business District with his supporters before being teargassed by police and driving around the city to his office in Kahawa.
