GACHAGUA IMPEACHMENT: Mt Kenya MPs On A ‘Damascus’ Mode As Public Participation Heats Up

A group of Mt Kenya lawmakers who had previously supported the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have now reversed their position.

Taking to various platforms, the leaders pledged to vote “No” on Tuesday next week.

Geoffrey Wandeto, Tetu MP, stated that he changed his mind after his electorate directed him to do so.

He observed, “Only a fool does not change his mind.”

“When we ask our people they do not see this as a priority. There are other priorities which we should be focusing on,” he said.

“As a representative of the people, it is upon us to listen and do what they have asked. So on Tuesday, I will be voting no,” he added amid cheers.

Nyeri Woman Rep Rahab Mukami, for her part, stated that after reading the motion calling for Gachagua’s removal, she realized that he and his boss, President William Ruto, could resolve their differences peacefully.

“After soul-searching and reading through the motion I realised this is something our deputy president and the President sit down and resolve because Kenya is bigger than all of us,” she said.

“I have listened to the ground and the people of Nyeri have said they do not want the deputy president removed.”

Njoroge Wainaina, the Kieni MP, has also joined the list. The three had already signed a motion supporting Gachagua’s impeachment, which was introduced in the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Gachagua is facing 11 impeachment charges, including inflammatory and inciteful statements, undermining national unity, contradicting the president on critical issues, public attacks on judges, and flagrant violations of the constitution.

Other grounds include abusive and insulting language, accumulating questionable Sh5.2 billion in wealth, insubordination, undermining the president, bullying KEMSA officials, and failing integrity tests.

The National Assembly has since begun public participation in the ouster process in all 47 countries.

Gachagua’s attempt to halt public participation forums was unsuccessful on Thursday.

He argued that these forums should be conducted in all 290 constituencies, the diaspora, and the 1,450 electoral wards where presidential elections are held.

In the documents submitted to the court, Gachagua claimed that the impeachment motion was false.

He stated that this was a “choreographed political lynching designed to defeat the sovereign will of the Kenyan people expressed at the presidential election held in August 2022”.
