Another Kenyan Athlete Dies In A Suspected Suicide

Clement Kemboi, a former 3,000m steeplechase champion, was found dead in Iten town.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge says Kemboi is suspected of committing suicide.

He was 33 years old, and Mulinge said investigations revealed that he had previously attempted suicide.

Mulinge explained that investigations revealed that he sold the majority of his assets and gambled to redeem himself.

“Reports indicate that he was in deep depression and appeared frustrated after his running career ended,” said Mulinge.

Mulinge said the deceased’s body was discovered tied to a tree on a farm owned by St Patrick’s High School.

Mulinge said the deceased’s right leg appeared to have been partially eaten by wild dogs.

During the 2015 All African Games in Congo Brazzaville, he won gold in the 3,000m steeplechase.

Mulinge said the deceased’s body was discovered in a bushy area of the large school farm.

“The body was decomposing and it appears he died over a week ago,” said Mulinge.

The diseased resides in Iten but is no longer an active athlete.
