Police Shoot Student Dead During Clash With Protesting Learners
A Bungoma National Polytechnic student was reportedly killed on Tuesday after a violent clash between armed police officers and protesting students.
The stalemate began on Tuesday morning when students from the institution staged demonstrations outside the school.
The students demanded the school principal’s immediate dismissal due to allegations of embezzlement and mismanagement.
During the protests, the enraged students marched through the streets of Kandunyi Town to the office of local Member of Parliament John Makali, where they sought an audience on the issue.
However, what began as a peaceful protest became violent when police officers intervened. In an attempt to disperse the protesters, the officers fired several tear gas canisters at the students.

Despite attempts to disperse them, the adamant students persisted in their protests, forcing the officers to escalate their response.
During the confrontations, the female student was fatally shot.
The students were captured in videos that have since gone viral on the internet hoisting twigs and placards as they protested the school principal.
The students were heard chanting the head teacher’s name as they demanded her removal.
When the students arrived at the Kandunyi Constituency offices, they began protesting outside the MP’s office, demanding justice for the deceased, who was shot during the procession.
After several minutes of protesting outside the MP’s office, officials were forced to address the students.
The officials promised to notify MP John Makali of their requests and to respond to them as soon as possible.
The latest developments come amid a surge in student demonstrations at various institutions across the country.

In a recent scenario, the Moi University administration was forced to close the institution due to unrest.
Moi University’s Vice Chancellor issued a statement ordering all students to leave the school premises immediately, with international students directed to contact their respective heads of department for further instructions.
“The University Senate in a Special meeting held today Thursday, October 3, 2024, resolved to suspend the teaching and learning activities of the 1st Semester 2024/2025 Academic Year as a consequence of the industrial action of staff and subsequent student unease,” read part of the notice.
The decision to close the institution indefinitely sparked another round of protests outside the school, with students lighting bonfires and barricading the roads leading to Eldoret City.
