Faith Kipyegon Leads 3 Kenyans In The Global Athletics Awards As USA Dominates
On Monday, World Athletics announced that three Kenyan gold medalists had been nominated for the Women’s and Men’s Track Athletes of the Year awards.

The three included Paris gold medalist Faith Kipyegon, who has made headlines for breaking marathon records in the past year.
The list also includes 800m race champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, who has been equally impressive on the pitch since his debut.

Beatrice Chebet, Kenya’s Olympic and World 10,000m champion, has run well in the majority of the races she has entered this year.
Kipyegon recently made headlines by breaking the Olympic World Record, winning the 2024 games in 3:51.29.
Chebet, on the other hand, has famous records of her own, including the current world record for the 10,000m marathon, the Prefontaine Classic, which she won in 28:54.14.

The 24-year-old has also won the 2024 Olympic gold medal, two Diamond League marathon titles, and a World Championships silver medal.
Wanyonyi’s most recent key participations include the recent August Olympic Games, where he won a gold medal in the 800m race, as well as two Diamond League Final victories and a silver medal at the World Championships.
According to World Athletics, the nominations highlighted several outstanding performances, including those from the most recent event held in Paris, France.
ββIn what has been another memorable year for the sport, the nominations reflect some of the standout performances achieved at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Athletics Indoor Championships, one-day meeting circuits, and other events around the world,ββ World Athletics shared.
Chebet and Kipyegon will compete for the final spot against Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States, Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, and Gabby Thomas of the United States.
Wanyonyi, on the other hand, will face Rai Benjamin (USA), Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway), Noah Lyles (USA), Letsile Tebogo (Botswana), and Grant Holloway (USA).
The vote to determine the Track Athlete of the Year finalists is currently open on World Athletics social media platforms and will end on October 27.

Kipyegon and Chebet will have to compete with four other nominees in the women’s category, while Wanyonyi faces off against five others in the men’s category.

Finally, only two finalists will be chosen from each group. Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen congratulated the nominees and encouraged Kenyans to vote for them.
“Congratulations, Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet, on your nomination for the Female Track Athlete of the Year award, and Emmanuel Wanyonyi for the Male Track Athlete of the Year award, by World Athletics,” stated Murkomen.
“You have had a great season this year with the highlight of your achievements being the gold medals you won for our great nation at the 2024 Paris Olympics, world records and seasonβs best times.”
