DR. JOYCE KITHURE: Meet Kenya’s Scholarly New Second Lady

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is a dedicated politician with a low-key personality and a private family life.

His swearing-in on Friday, November 1, provided Kenyans with an opportunity to learn more about the Deputy President’s family, which has largely remained out of the spotlight.

The Deputy President was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Joyce Gatiria Njagi Kindiki, who walked alongside him down the red carpet to the swearing-in ceremony.

Who Is Joyce Gatiria Kindiki?

But who is Dr. Joyce Gatiria Njagi Kindiki? She is the firstborn in her family. As the firstborn, she mentored and guided her younger siblings through life’s challenges.

Dr. Gatiria’s Educational Prowess

She is a highly respected senior lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nairobi, where she has worked for more than ten years.

Dr. Joyce Gatiria, like her husband, Professor Kindiki, is an academic with degrees in environmental chemistry, including a bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD.

Dr. Joyce Gatiria received her Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Nairobi in 2013.

The second lady is well-known for her contributions to chemistry, as well as her dedication to maintaining a balanced and impactful academic career.

The Kindiki Family

She married the Deputy President in 2001, in a memorable ceremony attended by family and close friends. Together, they are blessed with three children.

While the marriage marked the start of a partnership, Joyce continued her academic pursuits while helping Kindiki transition into public service.

In his first speech as Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki paid heartfelt tribute to his wife, Dr. Joyce Kithure, who, according to the DP, has made significant sacrifices to support him throughout his political career.

“Allow me to thank my wonderful wife Joyce Kithure a professional in her own right who has sacrificed to raise our three children Imani, Neema, and Mwende for the many days and nights of my absence,” a grateful Kindiki said.

“I am grateful to my wife, and children for being the foundation and providing support that I have always required as I navigate this difficult space,” Kindiki continued.

Joyce Gatiria Njagi is taking over for Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, whose spouse was impeached earlier this week. She is expected to follow in Dorcus’ footsteps and propel the nation forward with additional government projects.
