US Ambassador Whitman Visits Ruto’s Security Advisor Hours After Resignation

Former US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman met with a top government official on Thursday, November 14, just one day after resigning from her position.

Whitman posted a photo of herself and Monica Juma, President William Ruto’s National Security Adviser, on her official page, revealing a meeting.

Juma presented flowers to the outgoing US Ambassador, and Whitman thanked the security advisor in her post, hailing her role as critical to the success of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“Ambassador Monica Juma has been critical to the success of the United States and Kenya relationship in my time here. She is a true champion of Kenyan security and I will greatly miss working with her,” Whitman stated.

The facts of the conversation remain unclear, with the post marking the first time Whitman has spoken up since her statement on Wednesday that she had already sent her resignation notice to President Biden.

Her resignation comes just a week after Donald Trump won the US national elections and is expected to make a historic comeback to the Oval Office in January.

Following Trump’s victory, Kenyans dissatisfied with Whitman’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza Government began calling for her resignation.

Following the Gen Z protests in June, resentment against Whitman erupted.

Many Kenyans alleged that she had remained silent on the extrajudicial executions and criticized her for conspiring with the government.

Whitman resigned on Wednesday, calling her role as US Ambassador an “honour and privilege” since she was able to deepen the partnership between the two countries.

She went on to outline some of her most notable accomplishments in the workplace, mentioning specific missions she had participated in.

This includes assisting with the eradication of dangerous diseases in Kenya as well as mitigating the disastrous effects of floods in Kenya.

“From delivering emergency funding to alleviate catastrophic flooding in 2023 to the ongoing eradication of malaria, HIV, and MPOX, the US government prioritizes the health and welfare of our friends in Kenya,” read part of her statement.

Whitman also noted economic gains resulting from the two countries’ democratic connections, such as the US administration’s decision to elevate Kenya as its first significant non-NATO partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Trade, jobs, and US investment in Kenya are at historic highs because of our efforts,” Whitman noted.

“We also responded to the skyrocketing demand for our consular services, reducing wait times for nonimmigrant visa appointments from more than two years to about two months.”
