Motor Dealer Khalif Kairo Ordered To Stop Illegal Gambling Promotions
On Saturday, November 16, Nairobi motor vehicle dealer Khalif Kairo was dealt a blow when the authorities ordered him to discontinue an illegal gaming promotion.
Kairo was told in a letter by the chair of the Betting and Licensing Control Board (BLCB), Peter Mbugua, to stop running unfiltered promos online.
Kairo, known for his internet and social media promotional gimmicks, had started a promotion campaign and had placed a vehicle for sale.
The automobile, a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer, was declared the price in partnership with a digital payment service.
Participants were given several criteria to meet before receiving the automobile at the center of the promotion.

“The Board has noted that your company has been conducting unlawful promotions contrary to the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act Cap.131.Laws of Kenya,” BCLB stated.
“One such promotion is the just concluded ‘win a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer that you were conducting in collaboration with(name withheld).”
Kairo was instructed to halt the marketing immediately because he had not gotten the requisite validation to operate.

As a result, the BCLB urged the city merchant to obtain all essential validation documents before engaging in similar economic activities.
“You are therefore advised to cease conducting such unlawful promotions with immediate effect and ensure authorization from the Board in your future promotions,” BCLB added.

Kairo, for his part, expressed disbelief at the BCLB’s decision to impose an immediate halt to his promotional efforts.
He also blasted the Consumer Federation of Kenya for reacting to the instruction.
Such a useless federation. Bloody silent when Kenyans are exploited by everyone from foreign taxi companies, big banks, big telecommunication companies to betting firms but very loud when a small boy gives out a car to his fans. https://t.co/jpMsUR9byU

“Even giving out free cars is a problem,” Kairo stated while indicating to be shocked by the decision.
