Kibaki’s Brainchild Bill Passed As MPs Aim To Recreate Konza Technopolis

Members of the National Assembly enacted the Technopolis Bill on Tuesday, November 19, establishing the Technopolis Development Authority to oversee all Technopolis hubs in the country, including Konza City.

The bill, proposed by Dagoretti South Member of Parliament John Kiarie, is set to be enacted into law, ensuring that other hubs like Konza City be created throughout the country.

Konza Technopolis was founded during the administration of former President Mwai Kibaki.

“As we speak today, Konza remains the only Technopolis in Kenya but with this Bill. We can pave the way for similar hubs across the country,” stated MP Kiarie.

“From Wajir to Mandera, Kisii to Tharaka, if the land allows, we can establish these innovation hubs to drive technological growth and economic development.”

The Konza Technopolis Development Authority will be replaced by the new authority and merged into the bill’s 65 sections.

“This is about turning a good idea into an even better one. By removing ‘Konza’ from the title, we open the door for the establishment of other Technopolises beyond Konza,” Kiarie explained.

The group will be in charge of the planning, development, and governance of all Technopolises in Kenya.

The construction of more technopolises in the country will not only provide more chances for residents interested in working in technology but will also address a number of urban issues confronting Kenyan communities.

“This Bill provides a legal framework to establish, manage, and develop Technopolises across the country, addressing the urban challenges we face,” Nominated MP Irene Mawaka stated.

“No longer will everyone need to flock to Konza for opportunities. We can bring the opportunities to them.”

As of now, more Konza City-like metropolitans are being developed across the country, according to Embakasi South MP Juliua Mawathe.

“We are bringing three ICT hubs to my constituency this year alone, and the youth will benefit greatly,” Mawathe stated.

“We have to support the infrastructure and policies needed to make Kenya a leader in the IT sector in East and Central Africa. This authority will help guide us in preparing for technological advancements like AI.”

In 2008, the Kenyan government approved the creation of Konza Technological City as a showpiece project of the Vision 2030 initiative.

This new bill aims to transform the country into a knowledge-based economy, aligning with former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration’s goal of establishing Kenya as a worldwide competitor with a high standard of living by 2030.

In 2012, the former President issued the Konza Technopolis Development Authority Order, which detailed laws for the smart city, whose first phase of construction was finished in 2019.

That decree has now been repealed to make room for the new Technopolis Development Authority, which will oversee any future innovation clusters in the country.
