‘They Will Return To Their New Homes!’ – Governor Sakaja Promises 43 Woodley Residents

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has told the 43 Woodley Estate tenants who have evacuated their apartments to make way for a modern housing project that they will be able to regain their homes once the project is completed.

Speaking after chairing a Cabinet meeting at City Hall on Tuesday, Sakaja announced that the 10-acre tract of property, which is part of a larger 100-acre parcel, will be turned into a modern residential complex with 1,975 apartments.

“The 43 homeowners were compensated with Ksh.900,000 each to pay rent elsewhere during the construction. Once the project is complete, they will return to their new homes,” Sakaja stated.

To ensure fairness, the governor stated that all affected homeowners received allotment letters guaranteeing ownership of apartments in the improved estate.

Construction on the new dwelling units is planned to start in the following months.

“The allotment letters confirm their status as homeowners once the project is complete. From 43 units, we are expanding to 1,975 units, creating room for more tenants in a serene and modern environment,” Sakaja explained.

He underlined the government’s commitment to transparency and humane redevelopment practices.

Sakaja further stated that this is the first time residents have been compensated and given written guarantees before being forced to leave.

“Imagine a landlord giving you money to pay rent elsewhere, and later inviting you to return to newer, better houses. This is exactly what we are doing,” he said.

Sakaja also discussed plans to renovate additional Nairobi estates, including Bahati and Kariobangi, while adhering to legal procedures.

“We will modernize other areas in Nairobi as well. Residents will be compensated, given allotment letters, and adequate notice to vacate. We are committed to fair and humane redevelopment,” he reiterated.

The projected 300 Woodley Village Estate will feature a swimming pool, playground, and shopping center, setting a new standard for urban living in Nairobi.
