Karua Steps Down As Narc-Kenya Leader Days After Leaving Azimio

Martha Karua has stated that the Narc-Kenya party is considering revising its Constitution in order to rebrand and refresh itself ahead of the 2027 General Election, which will prevent her from running for party leader.

During a news briefing on Thursday, November 28, Karua stated that the party intends to alter its Constitution to allow term limits for top leadership.

“The party delegates have permitted us to amend our party constitution,” Karua revealed.

“We wish to be the first party in Kenya to have term limits for the top leadership of the party. This means that in the next party elections, I will not be eligible to contest.”

Apart from the constitutional revisions, Karua has announced significant changes to the party as she prepares for the 2027 election.

Karua indicated that plans are ongoing to rebrand the party, which will include big changes such as changing its name and color.

“Narc-Kenya is rebranding, Nark-Kenya is changing its name, we are changing party colors, but we are waiting for the process at the registrar of political parties to come to a close,” the party leader revealed.

Karua indicated that while they wait for the registrar of political parties, the party’s national delegates have begun the process of rebranding.

The flood of changes come as the party officially exits the Azimio alliance following months of disagreements.

The National Delegates Convention (NDC) meeting officially backed the party’s withdrawal from the Azimio alliance after the 90-day notice period expired.

The NDC claims that the Azimio affiliate parties no longer have a common vision as a result of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s decision to join the Kenya Kwanza government in the broad-based governance plan.

“We entered into Azimio to liberate Kenyans from the ills bedeviling the country, when Azimio’s purpose changed through its leadership who are the majority in the coalition, Narc-Kenya has deliberated and exit. We have moved, we are no longer in the Azimio coalition,” Karua confirmed.

In what President Ruto described as a broad-based government, the Azimio leader gave some of the brightest minds from ODM to be nominated for cabinet seats in the Kenya Kwanza government.

Ruto nominated ODM deputy leaders Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, National Assembly Minority Whip Opiyo Wandayi, and national chairman John Mbadi.
