‘No Regional Or Ethnic Balance!’ – KHCR Blasts Ruto After Recent Appointments

On Saturday, the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) weighed in on President William Ruto’s newest Cabinet appointments.

KHCR also criticized the President for allegedly promoting gender disparity at the top of government by failing to nominate women for his new Cabinet posts.

The lobby expressed worry that President Ruto’s recent appointments failed to consider regional balance.

In a press statement, KHCR stated that the nomination of William Kabogo, Lee Kinyanjui, and Mutahi Kagwe to the Cabinet violated ethnic inclusion because the trio comes from the Mt Kenya area.

“With the new CS nominations, the Mt Kenya region is poised to dominate the Cabinet. If the National Assembly approves Kabogo, Kinyanjui, and Kagwe, they will join Justin Muturi, Rebecca Miano, Alice Wahome, and Eric Muriithi in the Cabinet,” KHRC said.

“When the deputy president is included, eight cabinet members will be from the Mt Kenya region, constituting 34.7 percent of the Cabinet,” the statement added.

The commission criticised the president for failing to include women in his recent cabinet appointments.

According to the KHRC, only five of the 20 cabinet secretaries were women, accounting for a mere 25%.

“Such actions contravene the public’s trust and the obligation to exercise power in their interest,” the commission stated.
