School Reopening Dates, Academic Calendar For 2026
As the holiday season comes to an end, with families finishing up their travels, reunions, and vacations, preparations for the new school year are well begun.
Millions of students are anticipated to return to their classrooms starting next week for the first term of the 2026 academic year.
This marks the beginning of a hectic academic cycle for students in pre-primary, primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools, as well as universities and other postsecondary institutions, over the next three months.
According to an academic timetable released by the Ministry of Education, a majority of educational facilities will reopen before January 10, following a nearly two-month holiday.
According to the calendar, all schools are scheduled to begin their first terms on January 5, 2026, and will close for a short break on April 2, 2026.
Students are then anticipated to take a three-week April holiday before returning for the second semester on April 27, 2026.
The ministry stated that the first term will include a half-term break from February 25 to March 1, 2026, giving students and teachers five days off before continuing with the rest of the semester.
Parents and guardians, joyful holidays serve as a chance to prepare, such as acquiring uniforms, books, and other necessities. For many parents and guardians, the holiday season is also demanding.

2026 will be particularly unique since the pioneer cohort of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) is expected to transition to junior secondary school in mid-January.

The first cohort of grade 10 in junior secondary school is set to report at their respective institutions by January 12, 2026, according to the Ministry of Education.
“All schools, both public and private, shall admit Grade 10 through KEMIS,” a guideline from the ministry read.
“No principal shall enter a learner into KEMIS before he/she reports to the school physically. Daily online reporting shall be monitored through KEMIS.”
