TSC Issues Statement Over Rampant Fake Interview Charges
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has condemned as false a letter circulating online that asked teachers to pay up to Ksh1,000 to facilitate promotion and recruitment interviews.
The Commission cautioned instructors and administrators not to act on the unlawful message.
It further stated that it does not collect fees for any services it provides to teachers, including recruitment and promotion exercises.
“The Commission wishes to clarify that no fees are levied for any services provided to teachers,” TSC stated.
“Recruitment and promotion remain core functions of TSC and are conducted in a transparent and accountable manner.”

TSC indicated that recruitment and promotion exercises are entirely supported by the Commission, with no possibility for informal donations from teachers or school personnel.
The Commission said that County Directors of Education are given adequate resources to facilitate the full recruitment and promotion process.
Heads of public basic education institutions were consequently cautioned against engaging with or entertaining unauthorized financial demands from anyone claiming to represent TSC.
The warning followed the circulation of a message purporting to be from a teachers’ representative and asking schools to contribute money towards promotion and recruitment interviews.
The message made on September 8, allegedly required schools with junior secondary sections to contribute Ksh1,000, while those without junior secondary sections were asked to pay Ksh500.

“Good afternoon colleagues, you are kindly requested to ask our members to contribute for promotional and recruitment interviews support as follows: schools with Js at Ksh1,000, and those without Js at Ksh500,” stated the fake notice in part.
According to the message, the money was to be handed over to zonal chairs by Friday, September 11, to help facilitate the interviews.
The clarification comes on the same day TSC introduced new guidelines for teacher promotions, changing how educators will qualify for and compete for available positions in the 2026/27 financial year.
TSC conducts structured and competitive interviews before promoting teachers to advertised grades and leadership positions.
Applications have been submitted online through the Teachers Online Services platform and candidates shortlisted based on established criteria, including length of service and merit.
