Ruto Hosts Ghana’s President-Elect In Kilgoris, Vows To Support Raila
President William Ruto has praised Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, for supporting Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson position.
On Sunday, December 29, 2024, the two leaders conducted a high-profile meeting in Kilgoris, Narok County, to explore ways to strengthen bilateral relations and advance intra-African trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Ruto highlighted the conversations in a statement posted to X (previously Twitter), emphasizing the possibilities for partnership in agriculture, mining, tourism, and oil and gas.
“Kenya will enhance her relations with Ghana to cover more sectors of trade and investment including agriculture, mining, tourism, oil, and gas.,” Ruto’s statement read.
“This will broaden opportunities for the people of the two countries and sustain our shared prosperity.”
The meeting highlighted Kenya and Ghana’s common objective of expanding intra-African commerce.

Both leaders underlined their commitment to using AfCFTA to open economic opportunities across the continent, laying the groundwork for increased connectivity and prosperity for African states.
Ghana was chosen to host the AfCFTA Secretariat in July 2019, ahead of six other nations, including Kenya.
President Ruto also thanked Mahama for supporting Raila’s quest for AUC Chairmanship.
“We thanked him for declaring his support for Raila Odinga‘s African Union Commission Chairperson candidature,” Ruto said.
Raila is considered the favorite for the key job, with several African leaders endorsing his candidacy.
Mahama’s Inauguration
In a further display of support, President Ruto has confirmed his attendance at Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony in Accra next month.
“We also agreed to grace his swearing-in in Accra next month,” Ruto noted in his statement.
