Wamalwa, Kalonzo Visits Omtatah In Custody Ahead Of His Arraignment

Eugene Wamalwa, the DAP Kenya party chairman, and his Wiper counterpart, Kalonzo Musyoka, paid a visit to Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah on Tuesday at Milimani Court in Nairobi before his arraignment.

Wamalwa shared a short video of himself and Kalonzo expressing support with Omtatah.

The three made the unity symbol by holding up two fingers in the shape of the letter V.

“With my brothers Okiya Omtatah and Kalonzo Musyoka at Milimani Court where he is being held with other protestors before arraignment,” Wamalwa posted on his social media pages.

Omtatah was arrested for taking part in Monday’s protests against the increasing number of abductions and enforced disappearances of government dissidents.

Omtatah was detained among other protestors who were demonstrating on Aga Khan Walk in Nairobi’s city core.

The gathering, which comprised activists and concerned individuals, shackled themselves together and sat on the ground in a symbolic act of resistance.

The current increase in abductions—more than ten reported in December alone, and more than 80 cases this year, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights—has generated widespread concern.

Despite the government’s denials, human rights organizations, victims, and youth activists urged Kenyans to join the rallies in all 47 counties.

Demonstrators requested the quick release of those reportedly kidnapped by security personnel, as well as a stop to illegitimate arrests.

Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti Njeru, and Bernard Kavuli are among the campaigners who have gone missing in recent days.

Omtatah on Monday filed a petition at the High Court seeking to compel the Inspector General of Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to deliver in court those abducted by individuals suspected to be police officers.

He later joined demonstrators in Nairobi’s central business district.

While addressing the press after launching the case, Omtatah accused the administration of utilizing intimidation to silence its citizenry when confronted with their shortcomings.

“The government is abducting its people in an attempt to intimidate them. For them to try and pretend that they do not know what is happening is unacceptable,” Omtatah stated.
