A top Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officer was killed during a robbery attack at her Mombasa home, and her son was seriously injured.

According to a police report, two suspected thieves broke into Aisha Akinyi Abubakar’s home early Sunday morning and attacked her and Khasim Hassan, 18, with a knife.

“They gained access to the house by cutting the grills of the kitchen window while armed with crowbar and knife,” said the report in part.

The suspects, one of whom was wearing a mask, are accused of cutting Aisha’s head above her right eye and inflicting wounds on Khasim’s head with a knife.

They then stole Asiha’s phone (a Samsung a15), a 65-inch Samsung TV, a sound system, an iPad, and a Samsung a21 before escaping.

Police claim Khasim drove her mother to Premier Hospital, where she was declared dead.

“The son was treated and is yet to be discharged. He is in a stable condition,” said the police.

Officers have initiated an investigation into the event, while a manhunt for the culprit is underway.

With the authorities yet to issue a substantive statement, the situation is sure to spark a lot of public debate, particularly about the safety of election officials.

The event comes as Kenyans continue to seek the reformation of the electoral board, a process that has been delayed with less than three years till the national elections.

The event is related to other similar occurrences in which an election official was kidnapped in Embakasi East Constituency during the transition phase following the 2022 national elections. The official was later found murdered.

Chris Musando, IEBC’s chief information technology manager, was kidnapped and murdered in Nairobi in 2017.

“There was no doubt he was tortured and murdered. The only question in our mind is who [killed him] and why he was killed a few days before the elections,” Wafula Chebukati, the then IEBC chairperson, told the media.
