‘Not Us!’ – DCI Responds To 3 MCAs Summons Rumours Over Slain Activist

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has denied summoning three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) over their involvement in the death of campaigner Richard Otieno.

In a brief statement issued Tuesday evening, the detectives mentioned a viral post claiming they had summoned Molo, Turi, and Elburgon MCAs Joseph Ngware, John Mwangi, and David Nganga, respectively.

The letter said that the trio had been summoned to the DCI offices on Kiambu Road in Nairobi on Wednesday, 22 January, to record a statement about Otieno’s death.

According to the false post, the three politicians allegedly mobilized members of the public to attack the Elburgon Nyayo Hospital mortuary and steal Richard’s body.

The article further alleged that the trio took Richard’s body to Elburgon Police Station before transporting it to an undisclosed place with the intention of interfering with the current inquiry.

“In addition, we have in our possession intelligence reports pointing to the three of you having had differences with the deceased regarding his financial standpoint, as he had been under your payroll but had not received his stipend, thus causing him to struggle,” alleged the fake post.

“We are aware that he had planned to expose you, and thus this could be a plausible motive to commit the crime or be accomplices to the gruesome murder.”

While denying the details in the viral social media post, the DCI branded the material as false and asked the public to exercise caution and not fall for such deceptive claims.

The clarification comes a day after the DCI’s homicide investigators opened an investigation into the grisly murder of the Molo activist, who was reportedly killed by unknown assailants on Saturday, January 18.

Meanwhile, Otieno’s family has accused police of prolonging the probe into the activist’s death.

They argue that despite urgent pleas for a comprehensive investigation, the perpetrators remain on the run.

Addressing the press on Monday, January 20, Otieno’s family lawyer revealed that the deceased had received death threats and provided important proof, including screenshots of the culprits.

“My late client has been receiving threats and some of them were even screenshots that were out in the public domain with the names of specific people who threatened him,” noted the family lawyer.
