Kalonzo Musyoka Hosts Germany Envoy At The SKM Command Centre

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka hosted Germany’s Ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi.

The meeting on Tuesday afternoon generated a rush of emotions from Kenyans on social media, with some supporting him to run for president in 2027.

Kalonzo refers to himself as the “leader of the people’s loyal opposition” after a number of Azimio leaders were included in Kenya Kwanza’s broad-based government following the Gen Z-led protests last June.

Raila Odinga left to run for the head of the African Union Commission, and Narc Kenya’s Martha Karua indicated that she might leave the Azimio alliance.

Kalonzo’s meeting with the German envoy is considered part of a larger strategy of utilizing the Opposition’s ‘vacuum’ to begin positioning himself for the 2027 presidential election.

“We discussed and shared our perspectives on bilateral relations as well as the current political situation in Kenya. I look forward to our continued engagement,” Kalonzo said in a statement on his Facebook account.

Kenyans reacted to the statement, with one tweeting “Good job, Your Excellency” and another stating “Kalonzo hit the ground running”.

In August 2024, Kalonzo said that he had assumed control of the Azimio alliance and would use its flag to unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

He had previously endorsed Raila on two occasions and had ruled out participating on the ballot as a running partner in an interview with KTN on January 9, that year.

“I cannot make an announcement as party leader without consulting. We have been a very consultative movement,” he said.

“Vying for President should be a clarion call, but again, I don’t want to jump the gun; I want it to be an announcement by the party.”

Kalonzo has stated unequivocally that he will not participate in Ruto’s broad-based administration formed to calm massive protests about the situation of the nation.

Ruto appointed three Azimio-affiliated leaders to ministry positions, causing apparent divisions within the opposition.

Although Karua’s Narc Kenya announced its formal exit from Azimio on July 25, 2024, Kalonzo appears to have elected to remain but serve as the “leader of the people’s loyal opposition”.

Karua, Azimio’s deputy presidential candidate in the 2022 elections, opposed Raila’s plan to have his ODM party collaborate with Ruto.
