POLITICS: Ruto’s New Strategy To Silence Gachagua Revealed
President William Ruto’s five-day charm offensive in Western Kenya has revealed his political strategy to reduce his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua to size.
Gachagua, who was dismissed from office last October, is threatening to erode Ruto’s support base as he prepares for the 2027 elections.
The ex-DP has often attacked the Kenya Kwanza government, claiming that President Ruto is conducting a one-man show while telling his allies what to say.
Ruto has fought back with a multi-pronged campaign that includes downplaying Gachagua’s influence, explaining why the former DP was impeached, and demonstrating his new support groups.
The president’s extended development trip of Western Kenya was the first-ever demonstration of his might since Gachagua’s dismissal as his hitherto enemy territories embraced him.
Ruto’s rhetoric has focused on why Gachagua’s impeachment was important, as well as his support for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s position on the African Union Commission.
Raila supporters and opposition leaders, including governors, senators, and MPs, have joined him on the development tour.
Ruto has stormed Western’s five counties in the previous five days, marshaling government resources and gathering prominent figures from the region to win voters.
In an unusual move, Ruto paraded key opposition personalities and regional leaders to bolster his case, assuring citizens that he would not exclude them from government.
The President’s policy is viewed as part of a larger political scheme to oppose the former Mathira MP.
According to Nyando MP Jared Okello, the President has adopted a strategy of disclosing information concerning Gachagua’s removal in order to endear himself to Western Kenya.

“The President knows that Mount Kenya is not aligned with his agenda and that is why he has intensified campaigns in Western Kenya and Nyanza,’’ Okello said.
During his tour of Western Kenya, Ruto accused Gachagua of being a pain in the government’s flesh, dismissing his plan to deport the President in 2027.
Laughing off Gachagua’s 2027 intentions is intended to strengthen Ruto’s grip on the country at a time when the Mount Kenya region appears restive.

The president stated that there are people who were given employment but failed to deliver for Kenyans.
“Some people want to bring tribal, hateful politics that separate Kenyans. I want to ask them to look for policies, the people cannot buy tribalism, they cannot buy hatred,” Ruto said.
Gachagua challenged Ruto to fulfill Kenya Kwanza commitments to Kenyans now that he had been dismissed from government.
“They said I was the problem, I am no longer in government, why can’t they do roads, electricity and improve the economy,’’ Gachagua said recently.
