Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has chastised politicians for using the Generation Z (Gen Z) movement to advance their political ambitions.

On Saturday, January 25, 2025, Kaluma issued a message on his X account criticizing leaders who attempted to turn the youth-led movement into an ethnic or tribal cause.

“Just the same way they hijacked Mau Mau, which was a national movement, and portrayed it as having been a tribal movement, the tribalists are making all efforts to turn Gen Z into their ethnic movement against President Ruto and the current government,” Kaluma wrote.

Adding; “Gen Z must remain a national movement for good governance, or we withdraw our children from being misused by these tribalists.”

The MP’s words come amid rising political tensions and youth engagement in Kenya, spurred by the growing influence of the Gen Z movement.

Since June 2024, the country has seen a political awakening among its young people.

This surge of activity has challenged the nation’s political structures and increased youth participation in governance.

The Generation Z movement gathered traction in mid-2024, fueled by displeasure with the projected Finance Bill 2024.

The measure included tax hikes that were largely seen as harsh, particularly among young Kenyans who suffer high unemployment and limited possibilities.

Some politicians have since attempted to affiliate with the movement, hoping to use it to forward their own political goals.

This includes popular support for the protests and pledges to address systemic concerns like as corruption and unemployment.

This politics of the movement has created worries, with critics such as Kaluma asking the youth to stay focused on their battle for good governance and avoid being exploited for political purposes.
