PA To Late MP Wins UDA Ticket For Ol Kalou’s July By-Election

Samuel Muchina Nyaga, who served as the personal assistant to the late Ol Kalou MP, David Kiaraho, has clinched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the July 16 by-elections.

According to results released by the party late on Friday, May 8, Nyaga garnered 3,221 votes, 144 more than his closest challenger.

George Wambugu Kanuri, the closest challenger, garnered 3,077 in the election that witnessed a low turnout, according to experts.

The party primaries, according to data from UDA, attracted 10 candidates, and a total of 8,258 votes were cast.

Other candidates included Peter Njoroge Mugo (1049), Mary Nyokabi Kamau (406), Peter Chuchu Njuguna (158), Maina Kiambati (96), Joseph Ndirangu (90), Ezekiah Kamweru (66), Daniel Ndungu (52) and Stanley Mwangi (43).

National Elections Board member Jimmy Kahindi handed over the certificate to Muchina at Mumbi Primary School.

UDA used electronic voting, with party members casting their ballots through tablets and not the paper ballots employed during the general elections.

Before the primaries, the party asked the candidates to lodge any disputes with the UDA Electoral and Nomination Dispute Resolution Committee (ENDRC) within twenty-four (24) hours upon declaration of results.

“All electoral disputes should be lodged before the ENDRC within twenty-four (24) hours upon declaration of results or nomination decision giving rise to the dispute,” the ENDRC Chair, Adrian Kamotho, stated.

The Ol Kalou parliamentary seat fell vacant following the passing of three-term MP David Njuguna Kiaraho on March 29, 2026. He passed away at the age of 62 while undergoing cancer treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.

UDA’s main challenger for the seat is thought to be the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

DCP nominations are scheduled for Saturday, May 9, with nine aspirants competing for the party ticket, including Wakili Kiragu Wathuta and Isaac Ndirangu.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has officially scheduled the Ol Kalou by-election for Thursday, July 16, 2026.
