‘This Is A Wake-Up Call!’ – Uhuru Calls Out African Leaders For Whining Over Aid Cuts
Uhuru Kenyatta, a retired president, has pushed African leaders to quit moaning after US President Donald Trump cut foreign funding to low- and middle-income countries.
Speaking at the inaugural East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit in Mombasa on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Uhuru admonished the leaders to quit wasting the monies they receive.

“I saw some people the other day crying that Trump has removed funding. It is not your government, it’s not your country,” he said.
“He has no reason to give you anything. You don’t pay taxes in America. He is appealing to his people. This is a wake-up call for you to say ‘okay, what are we going to do for ourselves’.
According to Uhuru, African governments have been wasting their money by sponsoring pointless wars and skirmishes.
“Nobody is going to continue holding a hand out there to give you (money). It is time for us to use our resources for the right things. We are the ones using them for the wrong things,” he added.
“The bullets and the guns we buy we are not given for free. We buy them. And we are not buying them to go and fight wars off our shores. We are fighting our own people. Brother killing sister, sister killing brother over stupid things.”

Immediately after being inaugurated, Trump placed a three-month halt on practically all foreign development assistance, pending an assessment of what aligns with the president’s “America First” policy.
According to VOA, the United States spent slightly under $70 billion on development aid in the fiscal year 2023, the majority of which was channeled through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
Within hours of taking office last week, President Donald Trump halted all but the most desperately needed food assistance, as part of his effort to realign the country’s foreign policy with his America First philosophy.
His executive order suspends new responsibilities and disbursements of development assistance funding for 90 days while they are examined.
