‘You Can’t Play Peacemaker!’ – Kagame Hits Out At Ramaphosa, African Leaders Over DRC Conflict
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has criticized African leaders for how they have handled the current situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Eastern sector.
Kagame claimed that African leaders’ efforts to address the problem had been hindered by their actions.
He was speaking during the 24th Extraordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State, which took place virtually on Wednesday night to discuss recent regional developments.
According to Kagame, African leaders’ and the international community’s efforts to find a solution to the DRC situation were overshadowed by other personal entitlements.

He went on to discuss prior peace mediation endeavors, like the Nairobi Process, which was led by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“The processes became an end in themselves and the people leading these processes became more important than the result of the processes. The Nairobi process became the Uhuru process,” Kagame stated.
“So then you have the whole international community so confused. They talked about Rwanda, they talked about the Nairobi process. Honestly, even here you will help me understand what all this means,” he added.
Ruto hosted the EAC Heads of State Summit in an attempt to find a solution to the DRC’s increasing humanitarian catastrophe.
The DRC government has clashed repeatedly with the M23 rebel organization, with rising tensions leading to attacks on foreign embassies in the nation, notably Kenya’s.
Kagame accused African leaders, including Presidents Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and João Lourenço of Angola, of hindering regional efforts to resolve the conflict.
“Then the Luanda process – you cannot say anything that will displease President Lourenço. Definitely, this does not help with the serious matters we are faced with today,” Kagame asserted.

“For the last two days and this morning, I spoke with the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, who sought me out to discuss this matter because of their involvement in Eastern Congo. He is also there, pretending to be playing the peacemaker role,” he added.
I held two conversations this week with President Ramaphosa on the situation in Eastern DRC, including earlier today. Tensions in the Eastern area erupted for much of Sunday and Monday, with Goma, the region’s major city, subjected to heavy gunfire as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels clashed with central forces.
According to the UN, the intensifying war between rebel groups and the government has displaced over 400,000 people, sparking a new round of protests.
The terrible fighting has since spread to the Rwandan border, disrupting civilian activities such as education and business in Rubavu, which borders the DRC.
