CRACKDOWN: Health Ministry Shuts Down Illicit Aesthetic Clinics
The Ministry of Health, through the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, has directed the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) to immediately close all unlicensed aesthetics clinics across the nation.
This comes after a thorough review by the Ministry of Health of aesthetic clinics and beauty spas in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Eldoret that included plastic surgery and invasive cosmetic operations.
The inquiry was designed to assess the clinics’ compliance with licensing laws and ensure the safety of the services given.
Public Health and Professional Standards PS Mary Muthoni Muriuki stated on Thursday that 26 clinics had been evaluated.

Only twenty (77%) were judged to be completely compliant with license and operational norms.
Three clinics had sought registration and were awaiting approval, while another three were discovered to be operating illegally and without necessary registration.
“102 beauty spas were inspected, with 7 found to be offering invasive procedures such as micro-blading and micro-needling without proper registration or qualified personnel,” the statement reads.
“40% of assessed facilities lacked essential emergency medical supplies, while 25% exhibited inadequate infection prevention and control measures. Omnicare Medical Limited was not assessed as it remains closed pending legal proceedings.”
The PS then ordered KMPDC to close non-compliant institutions, emphasizing that establishments with poor Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) procedures must meet the required requirements within 30 days.

“Facilities lacking emergency medical provisions must establish and equip emergency trays within 60 days. Aesthetic centers/clinics without Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) must develop and implement them within 60 days to ensure safe and standardized practices,” the PS said.
“All beauty and medical spas are prohibited from offering or advertising Invasive medical procedures unless properly inspected, registered and licensed as per the norms and standards.”
The PS urges the public to exclusively seek cosmetic and plastic surgery treatments from licensed and qualified professionals.
She also stated that the government is creating a comprehensive regulatory framework for invasive cosmetic operations in beauty and medical spas to improve public protection, safety, and compliance.
