A police officer was shot dead on Monday, and eight remandees fled after suspected Turkana bandits assaulted a police convoy transporting detainees in Samburu County.

The attack took place at Charda on the Maralal-Baragoi-South Horr route, as officials carried detainees from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi for a mobile court session.

Marti Police Station Commander Robert Amuke verified the occurrence, stating that the killed officer was a police constable who was working as a driver at the time of the attack.

“On Monday at around 1900 hours, I received information that officers from Baragoi Police Station, who were escorting remandees, had been attacked by suspected Turkana bandits,” Amuke told the press.

During the ambush, the police officer was reportedly shot multiple times, killing him.

Furthermore, the criminals are believed to have left with an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, which was missing from the scene.

According to authorities, a multi-agency team, including officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and other police units, was rushed to the area to assist with the rescue operation following the attack.

The crew was able to locate two cops who had sought cover in a dense shrubbery with their firearms intact while continuing their chase of the robbers.
