Ruto Steps Up South Sudan Peace Initiative, Implores Kiir-Machar Negotiation

President William Ruto has maintained his commitment to championing regional peace measures, calling for discussion as the best option to restore security in South Sudan.

Ruto has led the appeal for a ceasefire in Africa’s youngest state.

He used his position as chairman of the East African Community to persuade the squabbling parties to put aside their disagreements for the benefit of the nation.

The President stated that he met with President Salva Kiir and First Vice President Riek Machar on Thursday about the country’s deteriorating security situation.

“I implored both leaders to engage in dialogue towards fostering peace in the country even as the region works towards the stabilisation of South Sudan under IGAD’s Strategic Framework,” Ruto said.

“I also informed the two leaders that regional consultations are underway to determine the best path forward for the situation in South Sudan.”

South Sudan’s civil war began in December 2013, sparked by political disagreements within the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA).

The violence, fueled by a history of ethnic tensions, swept throughout the country, prompting enormous displacement of residents as government and opposition forces.

Despite several attempts at peace deals and cease-fires in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2024, the situation remains unstable.

The June 2018 Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan resulted in a cease-fire and the installation of a unity government.

However, implementation of the accord has been delayed, and violence has continued.

The Sudan Liberation Army Movement, the Arko Minawi wing, the Justice and Equality Movement, the popular movement, Malik Aqar’s wing, and other factions have all signed the agreement.

The Nairobi Tumaini Initiative strengthens IGAD’s commitment to implementing the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the South Sudan Conflict.
