Chebukati’s Wife Describes Moments Before 2022 Election Results Announcement
Mary, the widow of former IEBC head Wafula Chebukati, has recounted the tense moments that occurred as her husband prepared to deliver the 2022 presidential results.
Mary spoke at Chebukati’s funeral in Kiminini, recalling how she desperately sought to reach her husband when chaos broke in Kenya’s Bomas on August 15, 2022.
Mary claimed her calls to several persons, including Chebukati, went ignored during the melee.
“I was lucky to get bishop David Oginde, whom I asked if my husband was okay,” she said.
“I reminded him that he was a man of God and should, therefore, tell me the truth. He assured me that my husband was fine.”
There was a scuffle as Chebukati arrived to announce the presidential results.

People tossed chairs as others began fighting, while police attempted to keep the situation peaceful.
Mary recalls calling Citizen TV journalist Sam Gituku to inquire about the situation at Bomas when the pandemonium began.
Previously, there was a standoff between IEBC Commissioners at the Bomas over presidential results.
Chebukati arrived at Kenya’s Bomas while four other commissioners held a similar press conference at a Nairobi hotel to contest the results.
Anti-riot police officers formed a shield around Chebukati as devices and other equipment were thrown at him.
Mary recalls previously asking ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit to visit her house to pray for Chebukati.

“In a moment, 14 religious leaders had arrived, and I asked them to pray for my husband. I offered them tea as he was dressing up, and after prayers, there was a procession to Bomas,” she remembered.
Mary recalled that in the evening, Chebukati told her the prayers provided a divine intervention.
“When he came home, he told me he saw a man point a gun at him, but the security pushed him down and took him away,” she said.
