Vocal ODM MP Issues Demands To Ruto Following MoU Signing

Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma has made two demands of President William Ruto.

This comes just a few days after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding.

In a social media statement on Tuesday, the ODM MP stated that big reforms were required in the national government to demonstrate that the ODM party was actually working with the government.

“We are either in government or not! It can’t be said we are in government, and yet our people are nowhere in public service,” MP Kaluma stated.

His initial concern was for teachers in the region who are unemployed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) until they reach retirement age.

The second concern was the scarcity of Nyanza-born leaders in public service positions such as principal secretaries (PSs), chief executive officers (CEOs), managing directors (MDs), chairpersons of parastatals, commissioners, county commissioners, or deputy county commissioners (DCCs).

“It is Canaan with milk and honey or no Canaan! We demand no more than our proportionate and fair share of resources and opportunities in Kenya,” he stated.

“We can no longer fight for good governance for the sake of it—our people must benefit from our struggles.”

The staunch Odinga supporter is among the politicians who have reacted to the two erstwhile adversaries signing the pact at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Friday.

Nyanza region Governors Anyang Nyong’o and Gladys Wanga have disputed that the MoU is merely intended to enrich the two parties.

However, Kaluma stated in his speech that more roles should be allocated to the region in order to cement the agreement.

Speaking at a burial service in Kiambu County on Tuesday, ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga expressed his personal worries about the Kenya Kwanza government, particularly the Social Health Authority.

He also expressed concern to President Ruto about Kenyans’ excessive taxation, which he stated was agonizing for the majority of salaried citizens.

“I have told Ruto that SHA has a problem; it must be corrected. The taxes being imposed on Kenyans are also high, especially one on the houses,” Raila stated.

He further stated that the collaboration was begun by Ruto approaching him, not the other way around.

“I have heard people saying that I have joined President William Ruto. I want to say that I never approached Ruto; it was Ruto who approached me. My stand remains the same,” he added.
