UASIN GISHU: Owner Of Unauthorized Police Patrol Base Speaks Out

The civilian in charge of the now-famous unlawful police patrol base in Uasin Gishu County has provided precise facts about his contentious decision.

Collins, who helped paint a structure in Ndugulu Location, firmly rejected allegations circulating online that the ‘civilian patrol base’ had been operational for six months.

He claims that he painted the structure in police colours only two days before the photographs went viral.

“I don’t know where these reports of the patrol base being illegally in operation for six months are coming from,” he said. “We only painted it five days ago. In fact, the paint is still wet if you look keenly.”

Collins further stressed that contrary to online rumors, the ‘patrol base’ has never been operational.

He added, “This was a community thing. The people wanted a police post in this area and decided to facilitate it. Such initiatives can’t just come from nowhere. I provided resources to paint the building, and that was it.”

When questioned why he was being probed despite the fact that it was a ‘community activity’, he said that the authorities duped him when photographs of the patrol base went viral online.

He further said that the OCS was there while the building was being painted and had no problems with it.

The community’s decision to establish its own patrol base was motivated, in part, by the area’s high level of insecurity.

“Insecurity in this area is very concerning,” he added. “The nearest police post is seven kilometres away (from the illegal patrol base), and it lacks proper resources to fight crime. They don’t even have a vehicle.”

Some of the most common crimes in the Ndugulu area are livestock theft, motorcycle theft, and robbery.

According to Collins, the situation has been exacerbated by the neighborhood’s proximity to the freeway, which provides an easy escape route for thieves.

Despite the fact that the community-established Cheboror Patrol Base has received national attention for the wrong reasons, Collins assures that they are still in the process of formally opening the post.

“This is not a criminal offence. We’re still trying to establish the patrol base legally because the community needs it,” he insisted.

He also denied any arrests, claiming that authorities had notified him that investigations were ongoing.
