How Meru Residents Reacted To Court’s Decision On Mwangaza’s Impeachment
Celebrations erupted in Meru town when a segment of its inhabitants took to the streets in response to the High Court’s decision to sustain Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s impeachment.
Online footage showed citizens participating in joyous chants and songs, with some blowing whistles from atop cars.
Actions taken in support of Justice Bahati Mwamuye’s decision to endorse the Senate’s vote to remove Mwangaza.
The celebrations caused a temporary traffic jam, with residents’ hooting horns and vuvuzelas adding to the rowdy atmosphere.

Mwangaza has garnered both love and hate since becoming governor, but the new incident appears to be a blessing in disguise for those who opposed her rule.
Mwamuye’s judgment appeared to clinch Mwangaza’s political doom.
The Governor had been fighting to save her job since the Meru County Assembly impeached her, charging gross misconduct, abuse of office, and a breach of the Constitution.
Notably, this was Mwangaza’s second impeachment. In 2022, the governor was impeached for the first time, just months into her office.
The Meru County Assembly impeached her for abuse of office, nepotism, and illegal nominations.

However, on December 30, 2022, the Senate overturned the impeachment due to inadequate evidence.
During his ruling, Mwamuye stated that the Senate followed the Constitution during Mwangaza’s impeachment proceedings.
While agreeing with the Senate, he dismissed Mwangaza’s petition alleging that the process was chaotic, stating that she had failed to prove her claims.
“The petitioner has not shown that the Senate’s analysis of the applicable law and evidence was so profoundly incorrect that no reasonable quasi-judicial body properly applying its mind to the law and the facts would have arrived at that conclusion, thus warranting interference by this court,” Mwamuye ruled.

The decision occurred after Mwamuye signed conservatory orders in December 2024, prolonging Mwangaza’s tenure in office by 120 days.
Mwangaza could yet appeal the ruling to higher courts in an effort to save her political career.
Following her impeachment, Meru Deputy Governor Rev. Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia is expected to take over as Meru Governor for the rest of Mwangaza’s term.
According to the Kenyan Constitution of 2010, this provision is vital in ensuring that no vacancy exists in such an important position as governor, hence guaranteeing county leadership stability.
