EXPLAINED: Why Nairobi City Gov’t Announced 3-day Closure Of City Hall Way
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has declared a temporary three-day closure of City Hall Way between City Hall Way Roundabout and Parliament Roundabout.
According to a March 15 release, the closure would last from March 17 to March 20 to allow for preparations for the WRC Safari Rally.
“The WRC Safari Rally wishes to inform the public of a temporary road closure on City Hall Way, from City Hall Way Roundabout to Parliament Roundabout,” part of the statement read.
“This closure will be in effect from Monday, 17th March 2025, at 8:00 PM to Thursday, 20th March 2025, at 3:00 PM, to facilitate the setup and hosting of the WRC Safari Rally Opening Ceremony.”
The message also asked vehicles who were accustomed to utilizing the route to plan ahead and take alternate routes.
It also asked them to work with the police and traffic marshals who will be stationed in the area to control traffic.
“Motorists are advised to plan their journey in advance or use alternative routes, and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals on-site to ensure smooth traffic flow,” the statement concluded.

This is not the first time the Nairobi Central Business District will experience massive traffic disruptions to accommodate athletic events.

Previously, major routes were closed to accommodate marathon events that spanned the city.
However, other occasions, such as the World Engineering Day march on March 4, have resulted in temporary road closures.
The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has announced a one-and-a-half-hour shutdown of a portion of Uhuru Highway.
“KeNHA would like to inform the public of a temporary closure of Uhuru Highway at the section between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue roundabouts on the Mombasa-bound carriageway on Tuesday, March 4, 2025,” KeNHA warned.
