Another Matatu Sacco Suspends Services After NTSA Super Metro Ban

On Saturday, March 22, city commuters in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) who want to use Metro Trans in and out of the capital will be unable to do so due to the unavailability of buses and matatus.

This comes after Matatu declared a one-day stoppage of services on Saturday to train and sensitize their drivers, conductors, and crew.

Metro Trans issued a message on Thursday, March 20, reassuring customers that normal services would return on Sunday, March 23.

“Dear Customers and Stakeholders, to continue serving you better, we have scheduled a sensitisation program for our drivers, conductors, and staff on Saturday, 22nd March 2025,” the company stated.

“As a result, all our services will be suspended on this day. We will resume normal operations on Sunday, 23 March 2025,” the statement further added.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your continued support. Thank you for your understanding.”

Their service stoppage coincided with the instability that Super Metro, another big player in the Matatu sector, is experiencing.

This follows the suspension of their operating license by the National Transport and Safety Authority on Thursday, March 20.

The suspension was imposed until the corporation fully complies with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, and other specified requirements.

The NTSA also urged members of the public against boarding SACCO vehicles.

According to NTSA, it performed a thorough study of Super Metro and discovered that 15 of its 523 cars had expired inspection certifications and eight had expired Road Service Licences (RSLs).

NTSA also discovered that numerous SACCO drivers do not satisfy the necessary qualifications, posing a significant safety risk.

Traffic police were also told to confiscate company vehicles that were operating in violation of the suspension.

However, the suspension caused worries because Super Metro Matatus were still sighted operating in many parts of Nairobi, including Thika Road.

Kenyans flocked to social media to express their concern about the continued running of the minibuses.

The company’s problems were believed to originate from an event in which a tout allegedly hurled a passenger from a fast-moving bus, causing the commuter to die on the spot.

The staff involved in the incident was later suspended, according to Super Metro.
